Investor protection and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa
Abstract: This article investigates the effect of investor protection on economic growth in Sub-Saharan African countries. The study covers 28 countries with civil law, common law, or mixed legal traditions over the period 2008–2017. A composite index of investor protection is constructed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Based on two econometric models estimated using a balanced panel dataset, the findings indicate that legal investor protection has, overall, a positive effect on economic growth. The results suggest that improving the business environment and facilitating the conditions under which economic activities are conducted can contribute to fostering sustainable economic growth in Sub-Saharan African countries.
